I take it for GAD, which appears to have a genetic component, and my 10-day prescription lasts me for 6 months. I take the lowest dose. How it helps me is it literally makes me forget to perseverate. I take one occasionally for sleep. It is a very rare day indeed if I ever take two, or two in a week. I’m used to having GAD, so I’m able to take the meds when I feel I cannot cope with having anxiety at that moment. It also stops the constant thoughts that keep me awake at night on occasion. However, I’ve avoided taking it for sleep. Because I can make a prescription last so long, I think my doctor is willing to continue to prescribe it, obviously, I’m not abusing it nor addicted to it.

I love how this med makes me feel! Before, I was a college student and agonized because of being homesick, and the other girls were brutally jealous and mean. I spoke with my family doc, and he put me on 1 mg 2 times per day, plus an Ambien to sleep. I was like a new person. I didn’t care who or what they thought of me or what they said. I was able to just laugh it off. Coming home for winter break, I was told how much better I looked and seemed different. I wasn’t as agitated. I’ve had maybe 5 side effects in the 20+ years that I’ve taken it for my PTSD/GAD. – Sleepiness, forgetfulness, memory issues, increased hunger, talkative. ~Nothing else. Now the downside is- addiction. I’ve actually had to learn how to use this medicine through incredible self-discipline. You will build tolerance to this drug within 2 weeks and require a tapering wean down to get off. If you take it long term, you have to taper every 2 weeks to keep your tolerance down. Withdrawals are harsh so that’s where the discipline comes into play. Now if you can take it only “as needed” during a panic attack and not need it daily- perfect! That’s how I recommend this medication. But to those who suffer 24/7 with acute attacks, you must follow the taper system or you will be in a world of addiction issues. But nothing will stop a panic attack in its tracks faster than Xanax.

I’ve been taking Xanax for panic disorder for approximately 27 years. It’s the only medication that works for me. I’ve tried SSRIs to no avail. And I can’t take tricyclic antidepressants due to also having a heart arrhythmia. I’m not convinced they would work for this condition anyway. A longer-acting benzodiazepine wouldn’t be sufficient either because we who have panic disorder need something fast. Panic attacks are a living hell. There are over-the-counter meds like Benadryl and Meclizine that help some with prevention, but if and when the attacks come, Xanax is the only medication that works. I have never abused this medication, and I hope to God it is never taken off the market. It works.

Works amazingly, but if you are safe with putting away your medication after taking it, then you’re fine. Unless somehow the day after only taking one pill, your entire bottle is empty. Highly recommended for anxiety or panic disorder, it’s very quick and efficient.

It works great, and you get tired enough to go to sleep if you need that, but it’s best used for short term, as it’s very prone to give nasty withdrawals, like psychotic ones, but great benzo compared to Valium. Ok, so it’s great. If you are panicking, restless, super depressed, it’s like a warm blanket wraps over you and solves all your problems. But if you can, I highly don’t recommend you take it regularly. It can’t solve your mental health/the thing that’s hurting you. You still need to train your mind to get stronger, learn to face your pain on your own. Just use it for emergencies/panic attacks or on occasion. It’s very addictive, and you build a tolerance very quickly. If you let it take over, it will make your life worse off than you started, and you will need to take it just to feel ‘normal’. It also can mess with your cognitive ability. I won’t let myself build a tolerance of over half a pill. I have no idea how people go to work every day on this stuff. It’s a 10/10 for what it does. But be careful. If your doc isn’t properly warning you of the risks, please look into it yourself. They have rehab clinics for Xanax. That’s not normal.

Every medical expert talks more negatively about Xanax as compared to its benefits. My experience till date is on the contrary. I am 70-plus with one functional kidney and two stents in my heart. I have been on Xanax 0.5 to 1 mg per day for over 25 years. Without Xanax, my life would have been miserable. Till date, by the grace of God, I have no negative issues that can be attributed to Xanax except dependence, which I don’t mind as I can afford it. But consider the pros and cons. I drive in a normal way, my balance is normal, and it has helped me get rid of sleepless nights. My condition is a bit of a gotcha. I have ADD with slight hyperactivity and panic disorder. Living with these co-existing conditions is absolute hell.
