I have been on tramadol for many years for fibromyalgia back pain. I take six 50mg a day. It does, in fact, help. It makes it bearable most of the time. I had severe Lyme in ’99, requiring 6 months of IV antibiotics. A year later, I developed chronic pain, diagnosed as fibromyalgia. I call it Lyme’s arthritis. I was prescribed oxy, requiring a pill every 4 hrs., producing addiction and withdrawals. It was hell. I then took morphine ER, reducing it over time. Taking tramadol is something I will never do again. I was prescribed tramadol as pain relief after an operation. The drug had no effect whatsoever on the pain, however, the side effects of the drug ended up being worse than the pain I was trying to relieve in the first place (I guess in some sense it relieved the pain by causing such extreme discomfort that I was no longer focusing on the pain). I started out with a painful hand and ended up spending 15 hours a day on the toilet, vomiting, being severely constipated, having horrible mood swings. I cannot stress enough how much I regret ever using this drug.

Tramadol saved my life. I had depression for 10 years between 8 and 18 years old, tried several antidepressants with no success. One day, shortly after coming out of the ER for a suicide attempt, I took 200 mg of tramadol without knowing anything about its possible use for depression, and the depression just went away for around 2 days. After that, I decided to take 100 mg every 12 hours, and it worked really well, the depression never came back. After 4 years, I decided to stop because I have sleep apnea and tramadol can worsen this condition. I divided the dosage in half every week or two until it was less than 12 mg, and then I stopped. I took 50 mg of pregabalin for the first day or two to avoid physical withdrawal symptoms, then nothing, and I barely felt any discomfort. Please note I’m probably lucky, it doesn’t seem to be so easy to stop for most people. I’ve stopped for two weeks, and I don’t feel depressed or anything. I’m still keeping it in case I need it again one day.

Tramadol is a lifesaver for my fibromyalgia pain. I take 1 50 mg pill, and the effects often last 48 hours. So, I take it every other day or every third day. Extremely helpful in reducing pain, extremely helpful in giving me my energy back. Lifts my mood entirely because it’s such a relief not to be exhausted and in pain all the time. The only downside for me is that it does dehydrate me quite a bit, so if I don’t drink a ton of water, I will get a headache by the next morning. Have taken a few times before. 100-200 mg works like a charm for RLS. You won’t be able to feel your legs at all. I’ve had three back operations, and I’m still in pain. Tramadol is the best medication I’m on out of everything: 8 50mg pills per day. It takes the edge off my pain, and I know when I need more. I’ve tried so many other meds that don’t work, or I can’t function on or hold a conversation. Tramadol helps with my pain, and I can function with it and with other meds as a mix. For over 31 years, I’ve taken low dose Vicodin and then low dose Norco (1/2 of a 10-325 Norco in the morning and sometimes another 1/2 in the afternoon according to mood).
