At age 79, balancing the benefits vs. risks is easy. Tramadol works great at controlling my day-to-day excessive worrying over mostly nonsensical stuff. It seems to have transferred my chronic anxiety to my doctor, whose concerns may stem from questionable academic statistics that hem and haw over the potential effect of this medication on kidney and liver function. Maybe he should be taking Tramadol also. I do 50 mg of the immediate pill (not the XL, which is a very different story) about 2 hours before going to bed. I sleep like a baby, then wake up looking forward to a mentally bright new day. Part of the good feeling results in slowed down coordination, so I avoid driving before noon; as a retiree, that’s an easy rule. In summary: great attitude benefits; risks (for me) seem realistically low.

I was taking tramadol and prolonged release tramadol for many years for fibromyalgia but very recently I stood back reviewed my medical history and realised it was causing my fibromyalgia to be much much worse by creating dehydration confusion and inflammation. I was going to be having surgery to release trapped nerves but giving these up I have been able to exercise with not much fall out. I no longer need surgery as the inflammation disappeared and I was then able to pull out those trapped nerves naturally. While taking them I could no longer hear certain sounds from inflammation in my ears and certain sounds triggered pain, that no longer happens. I can not explain my experience. I was disabled for 15 years roughly, I now can run 2 months after taking this step. The pain clinic advised this last year and I took the steps this year.

85 yr old female with RA and fibromyalgia. I am on tramadol 50 mg × 3 for 19 years. Pain level after 6 hours about level 2. Several times a week need to boost with aspirin to bring inflammation back down. NSAIDs do that. Tramadol works by blocking pain signals from reaching brain pain receptors. RLS will surface if I reduce the dose, otherwise OK. Wal-Mart cut off all scheduled drugs (management decision) and was without for about a month till I was able to switch to another company, noticed old-time depression and suicidal thoughts, really bad, immediately gone when drug resumed. Only other drug for thyroid. Stretching first thing in the morning and then walking for circulation since bone-on-bone knees and then am all A OK.

Low dose 50 mg per day as needed. Relieves muscle pain caused by trauma. Boosts mood with a slight increase in energy. Feels like an antidepressant without the brain zaps if one dose has been missed.

I’ve been using tramadol for my treatment-resistant depression for about 3 years now, taking 300 mg every day, and I feel like my life has improved significantly. I used to barely be able to get out of bed in the mornings. I used to work for just 3 hours a day, and even that felt like too much. Now, I’m working 7 hours a day without any problems. I have no issues waking up at 3:45 AM each morning, and I spend all day feeling energized and content. I’m honestly amazed at how well this has worked for me. I’ve also had to stop taking it a few times and haven’t experienced any withdrawal symptoms despite taking it so frequently, nor have I ever had to increase the dosage in three years of use.

Imagine studying medicine for years, just to be owned by big Pharma companies. Tramadol has the highest rating for depression on this site! Yet, someone is promoting the notion that it is an ‘addictive opioid.’ Never mind that my friend has been taking Tramadol for 10 years, 50 mg daily, and never increased the dose. It operates differently than most other opioids and apparently is more effective on some than others (depending on your liver enzymes, your personal DNA). Anyway, there is a whole under-the-radar tramadol dispensing industry, and while I’m not one to argue with the FDA, I think Tramadol should be more available. After all, it got a 9.2/10 rating on drugs.com. Again, it is the best rating for any antidepressant! If you take a reasonable dose daily (under 400 mg), you won’t likely get serotonin syndrome! (another argument used to avoid prescribing Tramadol). With Tramadol, my friend feels more alive, motivated, and loses weight.

I was initially prescribed tramadol for chronic pain that I was experiencing, however, once taking it for pain, I realized it completely took away all of my anxiety, social anxiety, and panic attacks. I was blown away. After 20 years of searching for the right medication for me, this appeared as my magic cure-all on accident. I’ve tried several SSRIs and SNRIs, along with other antipsychotics (off-label low dose), but found only partial help or complete help except for extreme sexual side effects and brain zaps with the typical antidepressant. I’m currently on 25 mg Seroquel in the evening before bed, which has helped with the racing thoughts, but it doesn’t help the social anxiety at all. It was a godsend, except my primary care doctor said she doesn’t treat chronic pain or prescribe off-label meds for psychiatric purposes. She quit prescribing medication, and now I’m back to anxiety, depression, and awkward social interactions.

I have taken Tramadol for several years for arthritic and fibromyalgia pain. I usually only take one 50 mg tab daily in the morning, and through the years, besides helping me with the mild aches and pains from these two conditions, I realized I was getting an additional effect of an antidepressant! I felt normal again, content in my life, and comfortable. So it’s been difficult for me to understand why the government was viewing Tramadol as a ‘strong pain reliever’ and putting it in the narcotic category! I understand it attaches to the same receptors, but so do the endorphins we naturally produce when we exercise or jog. I don’t believe that Tramadol should be in that category and taken away from those who would benefit from its ‘off-label’ effect of an antidepressant while also receiving its pain-relieving effect for mild pain.

My doctor prescribed it for my migraine at 0.37 mg plus acetaminophen. It coincided with days that I got up, out of bed, and picked up my laundry. It also coincided with getting work done and acting like a responsible adult. So, I’ve microdosed it daily by breaking it in half and taking 18 mg a day. It was my saving grace for my productivity and not getting fired from my job. Because of the stigma attached to it, I was ashamed to tell my psychiatrist. But from seeing other patients’ reviews, I feel quite hopeful that I might have a chance at living life. I don’t drink or do any drugs, and I’m not here to get high and abuse it for any pleasure, I just want a fair chance at feeling normal and picking up my own slack.

I started taking tramadol about 3 weeks ago for my club foot pain. Due to my having to walk everywhere and stand at work, nothing was helping the pain. I would take ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc., and it didn’t even take a pinch of the pain away. My doctor decided to prescribe me tramadol 50 mg, and so far it has worked! It doesn’t take all the pain away, but it definitely takes the edge off. The only downside is it makes me incredibly nauseous. I already deal with nausea on a daily basis, but this medication definitely enhances it. I recommend taking something for nausea along with it. The first few days I was really drowsy and tired, but it slowly went away the more I was taking it. I got recommended to take a half but take a full if needed. I definitely needed to take the full, but half might work just as well for other people. But it depends on how much pain you are in. Overall, I think it’s a great medication to take for pain!

Tramadol was prescribed to me for hip bursitis, and to my surprise, it had an unexpected benefit. For the first time in my life, my depression and anxiety were under control, as no other medication had ever worked before. I took the two 50mg tablets prescribed daily, and once everything was under control, I only took it as needed. I never experienced any withdrawal symptoms when I skipped a day or two, or even three. It was prescribed as needed and worked relatively quickly. I have been struggling with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and bulimia, all my life due to childhood abuse. For the first time, I could function, hold a long-term job, and not spend every day battling with my mental health and depressive thoughts. Now, my bursitis is no longer chronic, and my doctor will not prescribe Tramadol anymore. It has been three months since I stopped taking it, and I never felt any withdrawal symptoms. However, I am back to my old self, where I fight with my brain and depression every day. I don’t think doctors realize that this medicine can be a wonder drug for some people.

I was in misery for years trying to manage my RLS. Compression socks, magnesium spray, Lyrica, gabapentin, stretches, etc. Nothing worked. The sleep deprivation was worse than when my newborn daughter had colic for 4 months. Finally, I went to an awesome neurologist who worked with me on options. LSS, I’m taking Horizant at 5 PM, and I take 1/2 capsule of 50 mg tramadol a night before bed, and I’m finally getting consistent sleep. I’m not sleeping as soundly or as long as I’d prefer, though it’s improved to the point where at least I’m having some consistent sleep, and I’m no longer losing my mind.

OK for mild pain with hip osteoarthritis but did nothing when condition advanced to severe

5/10 back still hurts after car crash! Can’t sleep, can’t sit for long! This helps a little but not much.

I took Ultram for 7 years but it has now stopped being as effective. I still give it a 10 because it worked well for the past 7 years. Use it sparingly as much as possible.

I have successfully used tramadol (50 mg daily) in conjunction with 0.75 mg of ropinirole for about 5 years. I am 84 y/o and have had RLS most of my life. I had taken ropinirole for about 18 years. The first 13 years stand alone. At that point, instead of upping the dosage, my GP suggested I add the tramadol due to the augmentation issues with ropinirole. This has been the perfect combo for me. My next step will be to add another 50 mg of tramadol if needed, which my doctor agrees with. I have had no side effects from either drug and have enjoyed 7-9 hours of sleep nightly since 2005.

Good relief for 7 years. Now ZERO relief, system is used to it. So I live with a pain score of 8 or above daily, every day for the remaining of my lifespan.

Tramadol 75mg worked great for my cranial CSF leak headaches. I couldn’t function without it until my leak healed. And I took Tramadol for a few months with no problem stopping it.

I was technically prescribed this for pain/fibromyalgia. It is an off-label prescription for depression. It helps with the depression. 31 y/o, TRD, tried rTMS and IV ketamine, and over 30 meds. None helped. Tramadol is the only thing that’s ever cut my depression down. I’ve eliminated alcohol completely since starting it and have exercised daily. It cut my depression down by, I’d say, 30%. Surprisingly, however, the most extreme effect it has given me is near removal of harmful intrusive thoughts that come from OCD. Tramadol cuts my intrusive thoughts by over 90%. For OCD and depression, tramadol is the best thing I’ve ever taken. It was very hard to get, and I hope these effects last a long time at this dose (50 mg BID) and that the doctors continue to understand that just because it’s a semi-opiate doesn’t mean it can’t genuinely be great for other things. It does next to nothing for pain for me and does not get me ‘high’ in any way. It’s been hugely helpful for me personally.

Didn’t help at all, I would recommend this for someone with a mild headache. It is not for moderate or severe pain.
noshitadmin –
It’s the only thing that eases it. Thank God the creator that my doctor is compassionate and helps me by understanding and believing me that I need it for a medical issue. I have no side effects except continual fatigue.

Had absolutely no effect in the reduction of pain caused by broken ribs. Tried using it for 48 hours thinking maybe it needed to build. No such luck. No benefits from using it. It was easy to take… but if it doesn’t work, why bother.

Tramadol is the single best medication I’ve known, except for antibiotics, in my 60 years of life. It is labeled as ‘a strong pain reliever for moderate to severe pain,’ which is a new attack by the medical cartel. The truth is that it is a moderate-level pain reliever at best. It has very, very little addictiveness. It is extremely good at improving concentration, lifting mood, and leveling depression. It is inexpensive. It is an extremely good medication. Press your physician to prescribe it and do not let them off the hook. They must do what is in the patient’s interest and not what is in the interest of the money.

Tramadol saved my life. I was suicidal because no meds worked on my RLS. Lack of sleep is torture. Now my doctor says she will no longer prescribe it, even though it’s worked perfectly fine, with no addiction or side effects. I’m afraid to have to go through all the other RLS drugs again that I already know do not work on me. What can I do? I feel like I’m being victimized by my own doctor.

I was prescribed Tramadol 50 mg but found it not very effective and only for a short duration. Doctor switched me to 100 mg ER, which is supposed to be effective for up to 24 hours, but it starts to wear off after about 4 hours and seems ineffective after 8 hours. I supplement it with Tylenol Arthritis Strength ER, as the doctor suggested. I can’t use NSAIDs as I’m taking Eliquis or I’d use Advil, which provided better pain relief than Tylenol.

I have seen two doctors and have tried six different medications. Tramadol is the only one that is able to both stop the urge to move and get rid of the constant ache associated with RLS.

I wanted to know if tramadol doubled as any psychological medications after taking it for neck pain because I was on Seroquel and Ambien for sleep and the side effects were unreal. The Seroquel worked for sleep, but I was unable to be productive the following day. Groggy, irritable, low energy, just would take more to go back to bed because I felt like complete garbage. Then tried Ambien… hahahaha what fun that was… ended up ‘sleep driving’ and hit something in my car. Woke up the next morning and had no idea what happened to my car or how the damage got there. The first time I took tramadol, it cured all pain and I loved the feeling, but because I was prescribed it as a pain killer, I discontinued it out of fear of the label ‘pain killer’. A few years later after I stopped taking Seroquel, I stumbled upon a few and have been taking them on my own terms at 200 mg a day because of my mood swings. I thought that I couldn’t have been the only one to figure this out, which led me here, and I was right.

I am in absolute agony. Doctor refused to prescribe anything other than tramadol and Tylenol after my operation, and it is doing nothing. All it does is make my eyes cross – nothing for pain.

I was taking two Tramadol 50mg three times per day for sciatica pain. It did nothing to relieve my severe sciatica. I tried taking Tylenol with it with still no relief. I decided to discontinue taking it.

I’ve been taking 100 mg tramadol almost every day for the past 2 years to treat my depression, and it’s helped far more than any antidepressant I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot!). Before this, I struggled to hold down a job because I found it hard to even get out of bed in the mornings, but now I actually have motivation to get things done.

I just started a 30-day regimen of 3 a day 50 mg, and so far I’m not feeling the pain relief! I have severe pain in my neck to my shoulder! Disc 2-7 in my neck are messed up! Doctor asked if I wanted to try 100 mg extended relief 2 times a day. I think I should have switched to something else! What do you all think?

Fibromyalgia and chronic pain are the conjoined twin siblings of survivors. I have successfully used 50-100 mg tramadol with 100 mg bupropion for years. Tramadol never made me feel at all loopy. I use medicinal marijuana (orally and topically) for breakthrough pain (degenerative spine), and it’s been a godsend. I can’t take other meds due to glaucoma and side effects. I have never built a tolerance for tramadol, but can surely tell if I’ve missed a dose. The only caveat is weak addiction potential because addiction is much higher in survivors.

I have been taking just 50 mg (rarely sometimes two times a day) for about 14 years by now. I really can’t do without it. I sometimes don’t take it when I’m doing better, and after 2-3 days, I start feeling bad. I really try not to take it, but it helps me. It seems to help the brain fog on a bad pain day. I have bipolar disorder, so antidepressants are not for me. I worry that my provider will retire or pass away and someone will not give this to me. I don’t know what I would do. I am in a lot of pain without it. With it, my pain is mostly manageable, though I am still really exhausted a lot of the time unless hypomanic.

Took away my pain, gave me good motivation, helped me communicate with others, meaning I didn’t have low self-esteem.
